Sept. 3, 1988 Iowa vs. UH 27-24 Victory
Signs that Jason Elam had the right stuff were all over this shocking upset fans will never forget. It was a battle of freshman kickers.
Two fourth quarter field goals led Hawaii to a 27-24 upset of the ninth-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes in the season opener for both teams.
Elam outdueled Iowa’s freshman kicker, Jeff Skillet, who came up short on a 43-yard field goal attempt with 20 seconds left. Skillet was called in three plays after an apparent touchdown pass was nullified by a holding penalty with 40 seconds to go.
Today on Hawkeye fan forums – this game often comes as one of the worst upsets in Iowa’s football history.

As a Hawkeye alum who was at that game, dressed in Black and Gold, I can say for sure that this was one of the most painful moments of my entire life.
